POLITICS -
ACTIVISM
Stella Kokolis has been actively involved in politics for more than half a century. Her interest in politics reached its peak when Michael Dukakis, who was elected governor in Massachusetts in 1974, was nominated as the Democratic Party candidate in the 1988 US presidential elections-- the first son of an immigrant who managed to go so high in politics -. This was a focal point that invigorated feelings of security and confidence in the Greeks in America in general and Stella Kokolis played a key role in supporting his candidacy.
CHARITIES
Stella Kokolis is recognized locally, nationally and internationally as a preeminent community leader, educator, humanitarian and political activist. She has received numerous awards for her professional, charitable and political work by major organizations and political leaders both in the United States and abroad.
Stella Kokolis has been an active member of the Greek-American Community for almost half a century, primarily through the Federation of Hellenic-American Educators and Cultural Institutions, which was founded during the workings of the 16th annual conference of the Hellenic American National Council, held at Crowne Plaza, Queens, New York, on October 22, 2005.
The Federation was established at the suggestion of the Greek Teachers Association "Prometheus" and with the support and encouragement of the then president of the National Council, Theodoros Spyropoulos, one of the few expatriates who actively showed interest and consistent support of Greek Education in the United States. As an active member of the National Council, Stella Kokolis collaborated with him on many occasions, and she shared with him and with Archbishop Iakovos her dream to create a united body of Greek teachers nationwide.
The creation of the Federation was characterized by the majority of delegates as a historic event for Hellenism in America, as it covered a need that was expressed by teachers in America decades ago.
